Monks de Morgon

+
JMJ

So, I have become aware that the Monks De Morgon have joined the 'resistance' and published a 'doctrinal study'.

I didn't have time to read the whole study (it is !100 pages) and time is short, so I read a bit of the intro and parts of the conclusion.  I don't have time to do a proper translation so I used Google for those of you can't understand French.

The primary resistance issue is evident immediately.  They are afraid of contacts with Rome.  Logically, they will wait until Rome meets what they consider to be the conversion of Rome.  Sadly, as this is liberalism as the Monks are going to ignore the order from a legitimate authority ... like the rest of the 'resistance' they will simply scatter into their own personal opinions.

Why?  Because they are not willing to obey a legitimate command from the Authority of the Catholic Church.

What is missed is this: Rome hasn't even made it to the first level - accepting the SSPX as they are and burying the 'mantra' into the grave with Paul VI. Once we get to that step, then we will see what we see.

Now for a little thoughts on the conclusion:
Enfin, c'est notre devoir à l’égard des fidèles qui ont recours à notre ministère. Nous n’avons pas le droit de les conduire tout doucement vers les pâturages empoi-sonnés de Vatican II.
Finally, it is our duty to the faithful to use our ministry. We have no right to lead them slowly to the pagan pastures of Vatican II.
This is simply fear, uncertainty, doubt (FUD). They likewise have no right to disobey a legitimate command from the Vicar of Christ.
We know that some of those who have trusted us would like us to follow the movement and enter the canonical structure if Rome concedes it. Formerly, these dear friends thought as we did; we regret that they have changed. But we do not want them at all; we understand that the situation is very delicate and that it is really not easy to see clearly. May the pages that preceded them have brought some light. In any case, we pray for them. But we also pray for ourselves: "Watch and pray," says the divine Master, "that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is quick, but the flesh is weak. "
So the question I have to ask if is they did believe as the SSPX.  I find that as the SSPX threads a careful path aligned with Dogma, Doctrine, and Principles (see below) the 'resistance' continues to fracture along the lines of their personal opinions.

  1. Dogma: Pope has Universal Authority (V1)
  2. Doctrine: It is a Dogmatic Fact that Pope Francis is the Vicar of Christ
  3. Principles: True obedience as per St. Thomas Aquinas.

Oui, veiller : c’est est une condition fondamentale dans ce combat. La foi ne suf-fit pas, il faut encore lucidité et prudence.
Yes, to watch: this is a fundamental condition in this fight. Faith does not suffice, yet lucidity and prudence are necessary.
Well, I think they missed something, how is it be prudent to simply ignore requests from Rome?  That would be a vice as it would be ignoring a lawful superior.  Sorry, I simply can't reconcile their perspective with the rest of Church Teaching.
But this too is not enough: indeed, how many of our predecessors, then the Council, had seen clear and yet fell. It is because, in addition to luci-dity, we must have strength, to hold ourselves against and against everything, even if everyone would go against what we see as the will of God. It requires a per-severe force, to keep to the wear and tear of time. And perseverance is above all a grace.
At the same time the Monks de Morgon overlook how the 'resistance' has fallen and splintered. In both cases (Resistance and Regularized Orders) there were compromises with Church Dogma, Doctrine and Principles.  For a clearer list of issues with the "Resistance" see the Series: Errorsof the Resistance and their heresies.

It is clear that the SSPX remains on the knife edge having not compromised.

Comments

  1. As third order Franciscans in the society my wife and I looked to the Monks for guidance, as we had been very blessed to have met two of them a few years back when they were here in the States. Now, not so sure. A difficult situation, with them there, and us here, and not knowing exactly where they stand.

What is Tradition?

+ JMJ What Is Tradition? The basic premise, from my perspective, is that what was taught before cannot be contradicted by the 'present' magisterium, only deepened and expanded upon. I recall the Roman theologians called the SSPX protestants while the SSPX called them modernists.  I believe this was all surrounding the concept of Traditon. SSPX's Understanding of Tradition One accusation made against the SSPX is that they don't have a correct understanding of 'Tradition'.  This is how the SSPX understands Tradition: I finally profess that Tradition is not a dead memory, but the living transmission of the doctrine received from the Apostles. It remains living, in distinction to Revelation, which is closed. It is so both in the activity of the Magisterium of the Teaching Church and in the profession of Faith of the Church Taught, of which the sentire cum Ecclesia is the result of the teaching of the Magisterium. Tradition may be called ‘living’, not in the sense t...

SSPX.ca: What is the position of the SSPX on Vatican II???

+ JMJ With all the mis-information about the SSPX rejecting the Second Vatican Council, I thought it would be useful to publish an article that focuses on the real issues that the SSPX has identified. Update: Why Did the SSPX Consecrate Bishops? ( Neither Schismatic, Nor Disobedient link ) In the linked document the SSPX outlined the key motivation and core issues with Vatican II and the post-conciliar magisterium (see above link for full document): 4. The Society Acted Precisely Because of the State of Necessity in Which the Faith Finds Itself  In the present situation of the Church, if the Society of Saint Pius X had not carried out the consecrations of July 1st, it would have found itself facing an inevitable alternative: either to disappear gradually, or to accept, at least in fact, the new liturgy as well as the false doctrines of Vatican II and the post-council. Without the consecrations of July 1st, the Fraternity would have found itself, in a few years, without bishop...

Thoughts on: Finding Common Ground Between Rome and the SSPX

+ JMJ In the ramp up to the consecrations the noise floor in the intergnat grew to a constant din.  This was one of the few the peeped its signal over the noise. https://crisismagazine.com/opinion/finding-common-ground-between-rome-and-the-sspx The key issue is contained in this paragraph: In the lead-up to the planned July 1, 2026, episcopal consecrations,  the SSPX rejected Rome’s offer  of doctrinal dialogue on the grounds that “we both know in advance that we cannot agree doctrinally, particularly regarding the fundamental orientations adopted since the Second Vatican Council.” Fr. Pagliarani also said that his previous attempt at dialogue in 2019 was shut down by Rome because of an assumed irreconcilability. It seems that, from the Society’s perspective, and perhaps from Rome’s too, their positions are incompatible. If memory serves, Rome killed any opportunity for an open discussion by stating that Vatican II was not up for debate. So it was a still-birth and ...

Thoughts on the Thoughts of a former SSPX priest

+ JMJ Well Gary Campbell, former SSPX Priest and now laicised has posted a new article on WherePeterIs. https://wherepeteris.com/thoughts-of-a-former-sspx-priest-on-the-july-1-consecrations/ These words stuck out: Heck, they have built a five-star hotel, wine bar, and Walmart on the opposite bank of the Rubicon! They are not in danger of entering a state of schism, for they are  already  in a state of schism. I believe he doth protest too much. All the actual facts indicate that the SSPX was not in a state of schism before July 1st and an examination of the decree of excommunication highlights the either ineptitude of those in charge or a desire to leave the barn door open. The chasm between an act of disobedience and act of schism remains just what is has always been - an inconvenient barrier that person(s) in Rome seek to bridge but appear incapable of succeeding. The SSPX re-stated that they recognize the Pope as the Vicar of Christ and feel obliged by conscience...

The News is an Addiction ...

+ JMJ People seem to be mesmerised by train wrecks.   They just can't turn away as the disaster creeps forward along train tracks towards the crossing where a car, truck, bus, trailer awaits its destruction. Trads have been watching the train wreck that is this crisis of the Catholic Church for decades. The trade war between the Canada and the US has reminded me that the news is addictive.   The first time I was addicted what from 2009 to  2014 when I was closely following the Rome / SSPX discussions.  I was at work watching a live-stream as Bishop Fellay disappeared into the Vatican. The lead-up to this moment had been intense as the 'resistance' got freaked out and the cultural cracks between doctrine and conspiracy theory widened. In the decade since then other things have emerged, wars, rumours of wars, conspiracies, celebrity Catholics etc. Now we have a new addiction and its name is Trump. Lately, no matter how much I try, I find myself wonderin...
