Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part K: Roberto de Mattei: Is the COVID vaccine morally licit for Catholics?

+ JMJ  There has been a lot of discussion on the morality of the COVID vaccines in cyber space. However, as my readers know, unprincipled arguments are generally FUD evoking.  When FUD works, people make BAD decisions. This takes on a new dimension when the decisions are potentially life altering.  So, having yet another rational confirmation of the morality of the vaccines is consoling. P^3 Courtesy of Rorate-Caeli [Translator's note: The following is a translation of a review by Veronica Rasponi that appeared on Corrispondenza Romana of Professor Roberto de Mattei’s just published book (in Italian)  called “On the Moral Liceity of the Vaccine”. As many Catholics who know and love the Catholic Tradition and the Traditional Mass know, Professor de Mattei is one of the most important leaders of the Traditional Movement not only in Italy but throughout Europe.  His conclusions are very important for those who are weighing a decision whether to receiv...

Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part J: How to Vaccinate Like a Catholic

+ JMJ  I would not normally copy an article from Notre Dame verbatim, however in the case of the danger and confusion that surrounds the pandemic I will make an exception.  If Notre-Dame requests I will take down this article. Now for commentary ... This article lays it out Church Teaching clearly and far better than anything I have done to date.   He drew the same conclusions that in some vaccines the cooperation in evil is even more remote, and therefore preferable compared with vaccines that have a closer relation to the evil. Article worthy of a careful read. Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part i: Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

+ JMJ   The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has a website here (link) with four documents in PDF format that are relevant to the current situation. After a quick read of the pdfs (3 of which are reproduced below), I have happily concluded that they are consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church. In spite of all that the Bishops of the Catholic Church have done in the name of the "Council" and "Ecumenism" - they remain the princes of the Catholic Church. Pray for them! P^3 CCCB Note on Ethical Concerns Related to Currently Approved COVID-19 Vaccines The decision to receive any COVID-19 vaccine is one of individual conscience in consultation with one’s physician or healthcare provider. Choosing to be vaccinated, particularly amid the current pandemic, can be an act of charity which recognizes the need to care for others.  The CCCB echoes the call of the Holy See,1 by reiterating its appeal to governments to “ensure that COVID-19 vaccines that become...

Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part H: Responses to Comments by L Fischer --- Update A

+ JMJ  L Fischer left this comment under Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part F: Our Obligations and I thought it would be easier to compose my response in a separate post. First the comment (emphasis mine): Lfischer March 4, 2021 at 5:00 PM Really! “Select the option with less degree of taint “. Because to some degree there is less “murder”? You can’t be serious. You sound like the typical liberal that is scared of a virus that has a 99.9 % chance of survival and furthermore the wearing of mask has NOT been PROVEN to reduce the transmission of the virus or as you say “demonstrated to be effective in reducing the transmission “. Demonstrated and proven are two different things and I for one will lean on the side of a proven fact vs. a demonstration. I’m not an anti vaccine person but I am anti vaccine on some and this is one I am totally against! If one knowingly injects themselves and their children with a vaccine that has harmful components , not to m...

Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part G: Conclusion and Resources

+ JMJ     After doing the research that enabled me to write the previous articles, I arrived at the following  conclusions. The ends do not justify the means. We cannot abandon Catholic Principles just because it meets the flavour of the moment. The SARS-CoV2 virus and its manifestation as COVID-19 has created a health threat to individuals and the common-good. We need to ask if morally untainted vaccines are available and request to inoculated with them.  We can accept to be inoculated with morally tainted vaccines, provided there are no alternatives available to us. We have obligations to promote the cessation of use of morally tainted vaccines and development of untainted vaccines.  Yes, we need to strive for the end of the murder of defenseless, but we cannot make the anti-abortion agenda into a new dogma. There are worse sins, such as the sacrileges commited in the name of the Novus-Ordo Missae and inculturalization. P^3   Resources  ...

Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part F: Our Obligations

+ JMJ   Many have protested their belief that their 'rights' have been trodden upon by the leaders of our governments.   What few speak about are our obligations as a Catholic and member of civil society.    Our first obligation is to protect our health.  This is a serious obligation and guards against intemperance in our mortal life.  In the case of a disease, we need to weigh the risks to our personal health as discussed earlier in this series. What many seem to have selfishly forgot in their desire to protect their 'rights' is the right that others have, namely our obligation to the common-good. The extent that people will go to explain away the common-good is saddening.  I have already discussed the general risks to society and have been saddened by those media reports where Catholic celebrities speak out, trying to cast aside hundreds of years of the development of moral theology. I am afraid that it is a testimony to the liberalism t...

Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part E: Vaccines In Canada

+ JMJ    There are three vaccines that have been approved in Canada and one that is probably going to be offered.  Based on information from the Lozier Institute (link) Table 1 outlines the moral status of the vaccines that are either approved or likely to be available in Canada. As noted earlier, the use of the vaccines to prevent disease in ourselves or for the common-good is a morally good act. Being inoculated by a morally tainted vaccine would constitute a remote cooperation with the evil of the murder of the innocent whose body was used to create the cell-line. As such for sufficient reason it is morally licit to be inoculated with a morally tainted vaccine. I will detail our obligations in a subsequent post. Something that is new is the introduction of vaccines whose production is untainted, but who employed tainted cell-lines in testing.   The distinction that needs to be drawn is the causal chain between the vaccine injected in our bodies ...

Making Moral Vaccine Decisions - Part D: Vaccine Safety and Efficacy

+ JMJ   For the lack of a better phrase, there has been a lot of noise concerning the safety and efficacy of the vaccines under development. The initial safety and efficacy of the vaccines are established during three phases of clinical trials.  Monitoring does not stop with these trials, but remains in force for as a long as the drug is issued. Adverse events and various reactions happen both with, without and due to the vaccines.    Some of these adverse events happen on their own and in order for a vaccine to be deemed unsafe due to them, the incidence needs to be statistically significant.  In other words, they need to establish that the vaccine caused the event and is not just a result of someone having a latent or undeclared illness. In some cases causality is easily established. In order to assure ourselves of the safety and efficacy, the best way is to read the latest monograph that accompanies the vaccine.     Examples: Moder...
