Benefit of the Doubt

+ JMJ Introduction !!! From my point of view and based on my understanding of the events !!! At this point it seems that Cardinal Fernandez et al are either malicious, incompetent or geniuses. I'm only partly kidding ... Aside from the surprisingly magnanimous action of Pope Francis providing the SSPX priest with faculties for confession and ability to witness marriages, there has been a long silence between Rome and the SSPX with little or no formal talks or discussions regarding the SSPX state of canonical limbo. While the FSSP et al were able to meet with Pope Leo XIV, while requests from the SSPX went unanswered ... that is until after the latest unanswered request they announced the date for the consecration of four new bishops. Only then did the Vatican apparatus lumber into motion. A meeting was held and the speed with which the Vatican issued its press release - within hours of the meeting's conclusion - felt to me like a pre-planned attempt at manipulation that fell s...

Traditionis Custodes - Rewriting History

+ JMJ One Peter Five has posted an article by Dr. Shaw and it would appear that some history is being rewritten by Archbishop Nichols. In proof of this I offer the except below: This is found in the last page of the Archbishop's commentary.  It appears that his Eminence is referring to the alleged abrogation of the Tridentine Mass.  I guess he didn't get the memo. Even more disconcerting is the allegation that the Tridentine Mass is at variance withe the Conciliar reform (been there ... done that) and "an eccleisology that is not part of the Church's Magisterium". Perhaps he is not referring to the Tridentine Mass an only the other texts (brevioury, ritual, et). P^3 +++ I see that Fr. Hunwicke noticed the same thing: Benedict XVI wrote, in his Letter to the Bishops: "In the history of the liturgy there is growth and progress, but no rupture. What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden enti...

Rorate-Caeli: Italian Bishops and Cardinals were the origin and moving force behind Traditionis Custodes (an Interview with Fr. Claude Barthe)

+ JMJ  So the mantra has been reinforced to the point that Catholics have to profess complete and unreserved acceptance of both the teachings of the Second Vatican Council as well as the Novus Ordo Missae. Now we have an indication of who was behind this act of desperation:The Italian Cardinals and Bishops.  We also have an indication of why: ... mainly because in Italy, rather later than in France, young priests were beginning to celebrate the traditional Mass and to adopt more traditional ideas. They noticed a "traditionalization" of the seminaries, which worried them greatly. In the Curia as well, people like Cardinal Parolin, Cardinal Stella in the Congregation for Clergy, etc., were also very concerned. This is not surprising, In the 1970's the bishops were concerned that Archbishop Lefebvre was going to ordain seminarians in the pre-conciliar mould.  This launched the campaign with the accusation that Econe was a 'wildcat seminary'. Well, I think that...

Mantra in Place

+ JMJ Obviously the ' mantra ' is still in force: Vatican City (kath.net/ KAP)  According to Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, an agreement between the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X and the Vatican is not yet within reach."This takes time," said the Prefect of the Roman Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, according to Catholic broadcaster EWTN. What is needed is a "deeper reconciliation, not just the signing of a document." Those who wish to be Catholic must accept, among other things, the councils and other ecclesiastical doctrine as well as the "hierarchical communion with the local bishop, the communion of all bishops and the Holy Father".   (h/t Eponymous flower) I understand that Archbishop Pozzo maintained his position (mantra not in force) in front of Bishop Fellay and Card. Mueller. It does make me wonder if God inspires them to maintain the contradiction in order to protect the SSPX. P^3

Rome's Mantra

+ JMJ Just in case you're one of the faithful that have slumbered through most of the last 50 years - let's give a quick reality check of what the conflict between Rome and the SSPX is ALL about. It comes down to what I call the 'Mantra' that Rome repeats whenever they encounter the SSPX. The SSPX must accept without distinction / reservation: The Second Vatican Council The New Mass Really these two items encapsulate what this fight is all about as the Second Vatican Council set the theological ground work for deviating (ie rupturing) the link with past doctrine and - as we now see - Dogma. The New Mass is merely the embodiment of all the principles put forward in the New Mass. I know that there is also the question of the post-conciliar magisterium - but this too is an offshoot of V2. While the Popes have been more or less speckled with regards to the Doctrine/Dogma we see the fruits of their 'labours' all around us now.   So there...
