Principle 3: Study the Church – Study the Crisis It is important to understand that the 1950s weren’t as perfect as they seemed to those of us looking back 75 years later. Before the council, from what I’ve read, things weren’t all gardens and roses. There were reports of waning Faith, rigourism, indifferentism amongst Catholics. Just looking at the depiction of Catholic life in movies like Marty (1955) . At least the Popes up to then were being clear and consistent in their teaching and for that we should be thankful as their writings form a clear contrast to what is published today.
