It would also be great if Bishop Williamson would swallow his pride and ask to be re-admitted to the SSPX.

The SSPX Will Celebrate Its Golden Jubilee at Lourdes in October 2020

Founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre on November 1, 1970, the Society of Saint Pius X will be 50 years old in 2020. According to the decision made by its Superior General, Fr. Davide Pagliarani, it will celebrate its golden jubilee in Lourdes, during the international pilgrimage for Christ the King, on October 24, 25, & 26, 2020. Already in 2008, the 20th anniversary of the episcopal consecrations was celebrated in this Marian city.
The announcement of this golden jubilee is the occasion of remembering the close ties that united St. Pius X to Lourdes.

Saint Pius X and Lourdes


The subterranean basilica of the Marian city bears the name of St. Pius X, patron of the Society, because the holy pope maintained person ties with the Marian sanctuary. His sister, Maria Sarto, testified that, “He was very devoted to Our Lady of Lourdes, of whom he had a little statue that he would often kiss; because we found it to be well worn…I know that it was under his orders that a chapel dedicated to the Madonna of Lourdes was opened in the Vatican gardens, and that he himself assisted in it inauguration where I was present.”

Another testimony about the particular piety of St. Pius X towards Our Lady of Lourdes was that of Francis Xavier Shoepfer, Bishop of Tarbes from 1899 to 1927. He received a letter from the newly elected pope asking him to entrust his papacy to the Virgin Mary.

This prelate informed his diocese that the pope wanted to build a replica of the Grotto of Massabielle in the Vatican gardens. He wrote to them, “This project is the personal initiative of our Holy Father the Pope. Everyone knows about the worship that Pius X devoted to the Madonna of the Pyrenees. The tender piety of the future pope, two years before, had formed the plan of going to Lourdes at the head of an Italian pilgrimage, a plan which the state of his health then forced Cardinal Sarto to abandon. And since his accession to the sovereign pontificate did he not write “to the modest Bishop of Tarbes” [it is Bishop Shoepfer refers to himself so] one of the first letters bearing his signature, pouring out in a language of a moving simplicity, his feelings of tender devotion for the one we invoke before the miraculous Grotto.”

On March 29, 1905, when the faithful reproduction of the Grotto was inaugurated in the Vatican Gardens, the Bishop of Tarbes, gave the profound sense of the finally realized project, “O Our Lady of Lourdes, whose Sanctuary is today united and sealed by Pius X to the unshakable rock of St. Peter, with your all-powerful and merciful hands, deign to seal the union of France with the Church, the union of the Eldest Daughter with her Mother.” This idea of a pact henceforth established between the miraculous rock of Massabielle and the mystical rock of the Vatican, will never leave Pius X, and, many times, in his speeches, he will evoke it in moving terms.

His secretary of state, Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val, also echoed the many testimonies of the special devotion of the Holy Pope: “In his walks in the Vatican Gardens, he was accustomed to make a visit to the chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes.”

St. Pius X granted many spiritual favors and marks of esteem to the sanctuary of Lourdes on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Apparitions. He extended to the universal Church the feast of the apparition of February 11. He introduced the cause for the beatification of Bernadette. He thanked Our Lady for having established in Lourdes “the seat of her immense kindness.” He emphasized the link that exists in Lourdes between piety towards the Mother of God and piety towards Our Lord, and he rendered this moving homage: “The unique glory of the Sanctuary of Lourdes lies in the fact that people are all attracted there by Mary for the adoration of Jesus Christ in the august Sacrament, so that this sanctuary, at once the center of the Marian cult and the throne of the Eucharistic mystery, surpasses, it seems, in glory all the others in the Catholic world” (Letter of July 12, 1914, A.A.S.VI, 1914, pp. 376).

Throughout his life, St. Pius X provided much evidence of his attachment to Lourdes. So it was with emotion on the day after his canonization, on the evening of Sunday, May 30, 1954, that the faithful who were present could hear the bells of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, met by the melody of the Ave Maria of Lourdes, at the end of a triumphal procession, the reliquary containing the remains of the holy pope.

Giuseppe Sarto was ordained a priest on September 18, 1858, during the year of the apparitions of Lourdes. Pius X was canonized by Pius XII on May 29, 1954, in the year of the centenary of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception by Pius IX.

    Better yet Bishop Fellay and Fr Pagliarani swallow their blind fervor and follow the good Archbishop!

    “It is, therefore, a strict duty for every priest wanting to remain Catholic to separate himself from this Conciliar Church for as long as it does not rediscover the tradition of the Church and of the Catholic Faith.” (Abp. Lefebvre, Spiritual Journey, p. 13)

      Hi Gullible,

      Not so fast ... are you suggesting that the SSPX should not heed the call of the Vicar of Christ and obey whenever possible to do so?

      I truly hope not because that is not the path of Archbishop Lefebvre, it is a path that leads away from the Catholic truth and leads to perdition in this crisis.

      A couple of other things ...

      Second, what is the 'Conciliar Church'? Is it a separate organization from the Catholic Church or, as described in the letter of the district superiors a :

      "... To the extent in which a ‘change of direction’since Vatican II has occurred, we use the term ‘conciliar Church’. This expression is commonly understood, not as a distinct object or substance, but rather as a new spirit, introduced into the Church at the time of the Council Vatican II, and which constitutes an obstacle the end of the Church ..."

      Hi Tradical
      you know what the Archbishop said if called to Rome, He would lay out the anti modernist encyclicals of the pre V2 popes and ask them if they accept them, if not , call me again and it will be the same thing.
      secondly the Conciliar Church is modernism which is every error under the sun, it is the new religion, it is being promoted by the heiarchy in the Catholic Church, that's how the simple man understands it.

      What is the pronouncement of the definition of the Conciliar Church from the Catholic Church?

      please explain your theory of the 2 chapters you laid out

 + JMJ I see that the 'resistors' are in a tizzy because Fr. Robinson used them as an example instead of the sedevacantists. What is interesting is that you can apply the exact same reasons against going to a sede mass as that of the 'resistors'. Namely: On the other extreme are those situations where an SSPX priest knows that a certain non-SSPX traditionalist venue is a grave danger to the faith . Frankly, most, if not all, of the Resistance Masses would fall into this category. In many cases, the behavior of these priests has been and continues to be scandalous, by their (A) spirit, their (B) preaching, and their indiscriminate conferral of the (C) priesthood and (D) episcopacy. Correcting Caricatures of the SSPX

 + JMJ Introduction First, a little background on the FSSP St. John Vianney Chapel in Mission Hill Kansas.  After the 1988 consecrations and the foundation of the FSSP there was a consistent trend of Dioceses allowing the SSPX to run chapels and churches near SSPX locations. As with any 'organizational change' there were those who didn't agree with the change and no longer sought the sacraments from the SSPX. I heard from friends that in that era there was a lot of anger and tension (on both sides) between the St. Mary's SSPX and Mission Hill FSSP.  Second, there have been caricatures of the SSPX position (some are evident below) in which personal opinions of SSPX priests and laity are taken as the official position or conflated with those of sedevacantists or 'resistance'. SSPX: Why Is the SSPX So Criticized?

 + JMJ As long as you are ok with what happens in other Catholic Churches, Traditional Catholics will be left 'alone'.  This is a paraphrase of words spoken by an Archbishop to Traditional Catholics (with a sprinkling of SSPX) who had requested the Traditional Latin Mass under Summorum Pontificum. This reflects that attitude of the Church towards anyone who takes issue with some of the ambiguities of Vatican II and the post-conciliar magisterium.  If you reject the papacy but are ok with V2, the New Mass, and what Rome has stated since 1965 - then you are welcome. Question some of the more abiguous statements and ask for Rome to realise that a circle is not a square - then you are in for a world of hurt. This is where the SSPX exists and has existed from almost its very first moments. Pointing out contradictions with previous magisterium is not acceptable - under any condition. Why? Stories: Early Days of Tradition Part 8 - Convention Centre Chapel

 + JMJ I came to Tradition a few years after they had bought a chapel. My wife told me of the earlier years when Fr. Normandin would come to town and Mass would be held in a room at the convention centre.  He'd start by blessing the room and then proceed with Mass. This went on for a while before the one of the faithful found a small hall that would suit just fine. They pooled their money and bought the building.  Then came the work as the retiree's refinished the floor, setup the sactuary. Oh, did I mention that I heard that the hall had been used by a motorcycle gang? The floor needed a lot of work.  I remember seeing pictures of the founders working to make the hall into a fitting place for the Sacrifice of the Mass. (Movie Quote: Prince Caspian) The Spread of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt I've seen a lot of FUD spreading across the intergnat on various stats etc.   So let's put this in context ... especially the perspective of those people in positions of authority who need to make decisions to protect the lives of their citizens. Yep, this is going to be that type of post.  Like it or not the leaders of our governments have their authority from God.  So, as Catholics should know, you need to have a very good reason to deliberately disobey the orders of their superiors. This is basic St. Thomas Aquinas ... so don't blame me for discussing things from a Catholic perspective.
