Will Novelties Never Cease? Protestant Tony Palmer Receives Catholic Requiem Mass - Catholic Family News

I almost feel like adding another 'label' to categorize all the Pope Francis novelties: Bergolio Era.

But that would be redundant as the idiosyncrasies of Pope Francis are merely a symptom or artifact of the underlying cultural change that has been in progress since the Second Vatican Council.

The latest novelty is twofold: 
  1. Tony Palmer (RIP) had a public Catholic requiem Mass said for him
  2. It was said as if he were a Bishop of the Catholic Church
There are a few oddities that have come out about Mr. Palmer as a result of his untimely death.
  1. Pope Francis advised him not to convert
  2. His wife and children are Catholic (apparently led back into the Church by Tony which is curious-er and curious-er since he wouldn't lead anyone into the Church or something to that effect ... I'll need to check that reference or video)
  3. The requiem took place in a Catholic Church
  4. He was buried in a Catholic cemetery
When Pope Francis said to the SSPX that they are Catholic, I wonder if he meant it in the same manner that he seems to believe the Tony Palmer was Bishop and Catholic.

Now this is truly a confusing situation.

    So, he violated these canons from the '83 Code:

    Can. 1184 §1. Unless they gave some signs of repentance before death, the following must be deprived of ecclesiastical funerals:

    1/ notorious apostates, heretics, and schismatics;

    2/ those who chose the cremation of their bodies for reasons contrary to Christian faith;

    3/ other manifest sinners who cannot be granted ecclesiastical funerals without public scandal of the faithful.

    §2. If any doubt occurs, the local ordinary is to be consulted, and his judgment must be followed.

    Can. 1185 Any funeral Mass must also be denied a person who is excluded from ecclesiastical funerals.

      He apparently wanted to convert but the Pope (when still a Cardinal) advised against it. So that would qualify under item #1.

+ JMJ So here we are on the apparent cusp of yet another post conciliar Papal canonization. This time we have Pope's John-Paul I and Paul VI canonizations to 'look forward' to. SSPX: Why Is the SSPX So Criticized?

 + JMJ As long as you are ok with what happens in other Catholic Churches, Traditional Catholics will be left 'alone'.  This is a paraphrase of words spoken by an Archbishop to Traditional Catholics (with a sprinkling of SSPX) who had requested the Traditional Latin Mass under Summorum Pontificum. This reflects that attitude of the Church towards anyone who takes issue with some of the ambiguities of Vatican II and the post-conciliar magisterium.  If you reject the papacy but are ok with V2, the New Mass, and what Rome has stated since 1965 - then you are welcome. Question some of the more abiguous statements and ask for Rome to realise that a circle is not a square - then you are in for a world of hurt. This is where the SSPX exists and has existed from almost its very first moments. Pointing out contradictions with previous magisterium is not acceptable - under any condition. Why? Shining the light of Church Teaching on the doctrinal positions of the SSPX and the Resistance. Principles are guides used to aid in decision making.  It stands to reason that bad principles will lead to bad decisions. The recent interactions between Rome and the SSPX has challenged a number of closely held cultural assumptions of people in both sides of the disagreement. This has resulted in cultural skirmishes in both Rome and the SSPX.
