Fatima: Did Russia Convert?

It Ain't Over Until Our Lady Says It's Over!!!

So ... stepping back from the brink it is time to take a look at the situation of the Catholic Church and then the World.

I am contemplating that the "Liberal", "Brutualist", and "Catholic" perspectives are all quite different and only the real one is steeped in Virtue.

Liberal: Basically, there is no God, no Original Sin and Humans can talk their way out of everything. This may be a bit of a caricature, but I feel not too far off.  In the end is that the only restraint or unmovable barrier is that there is no barrier. Anyone who supports an opposing view is met with Liberal Brutality.

Brutalist: The simplest way to frame is that Might makes Right.  Now I don't just mean physical or military might - but also economic right. Yes, as a Canadian in 2026, I have been reminded of the dimensions of the different facets of 'might'. In this case, the Brutes assert their dominance over the weak to achieve their own goals.  Now these goals may be Nationalistic, political, personal, etc.

The Forms these two 'world views' can take are widely varying and have one thing in common - they lack virtue and promote or at least unshackle vice. In many cases they transform or mask what is vice into virtue.

So ... the reality is that neither of these extremes can support a lasting civilization and tend (in my opinion) to revolution.

So is there a middle ground? I don't know. It may be situational but I do know that it requires the practice of virtue by the majority of people in the society.  Obviously, the families are the core because in a country that has a sufficiently high enough birth rate to maintain it's size and to degree its culture (2.1 or higher).

I was once told that virtue is the pinnacle between two vices and looking at the Canadian Liberal, Conservative and New Democratic Party debacle ... it rings true.

So looking at the world today, accepting that the apparitions of Our Blessed Lady at Fatima and the requirement for the Pope with all the Bishops to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we have to ask the following questions:

Was Our Lady's request fulfilled?

We can look for the answer by asking another question: Has Russia Converted?  The simple answer is no.

There have been at least seven (7) attempts since 1942 and none have complied with the request for the Pope in union with all the bishops of the world to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Not one consecration actually succeeded in fulfilling all the criteria required by Our Lady!

Why?

I think I know and I think it is the same reason why this crisis continues in the Catholic Church and affects the entire world as the candle of the Faith continues to be placed under the bushel (Matthew 5:15).

In short, pride and perhaps even hubris

A Comparison of Hubris and Pride (Google AI Summary)

Explore the key differences between pride and hubris, detailing how they impact self-perception, behavior, and relationships. [1]
Pride
  • Definition: A deep feeling of satisfaction or self-respect rooted in genuine accomplishments, effort, or personal growth. [1, 2, 3]
  • Nature: Can be positive (authentic pride) when it motivates hard work, skill mastery, and connection with others. [1, 2]
  • Opposite: Shame (for negative pride) or humility (when balanced with self-awareness). [1]
  • Example: Feeling proud after hours of practice to finish a difficult project or master a new skill. [1, 2]
Hubris
  • Definition: Extreme, overbearing pride or dangerous overconfidence combined with arrogance. [1]
  • Nature: Always negative; it involves an inflated self-view, detachment from reality, and a belief that normal rules or limits do not apply to you. [1, 2, 3]
  • Opposite: Humility or modesty. [1]
  • Example: Believing you are untouchable, dismissing good advice, or mocking others because you think you are inherently superior. [1]
Key Comparisons

FeaturePride (Authentic)Hubris
SourceEarned through "doing" (actions and effort)Claimed through "being" (an unearned sense of superiority)
ConnotationCan be healthy and pro-socialStrictly negative and destructive
Social ImpactBuilds mutual respect and cooperationLeads to hostility, aggression, and isolation

Conclusion

So what will have to happen?  The arrogance, vanity, hubris and pride of the leaders and followers of the Catholic Church will have to be replaced with humility.

Why else has not one of the four Popes succeeded in making the consecration, what does Russia continue to punish the world?

Why is the formerly Catholic Civilizations drift in the storm with neither sail nor rudder?

There is only one way to for this change of soul to happen, we need to pray and make sacrifices.

News Roundup: October 19, 2026

+ JMJ Well ... I was looking in my blog drafts and found this list from after my News is an Addiction post. So ... yep ... not totally able to disconnect from the news world at this point.  Frankly, I haven't read all of these articles - they catch my eye as I check for SSPX news regarding the exco's etc. So let's consider these topics as part of a higher level chronicle. They may not be key inflection points but helps to understand the flow of the world as perceived by the authors and myself who captured them as a snapshot in time. The Debt Canadian Traditional Catholics Owe to Fr. Yves Normandin (RIP)

+ JMJ On this All Souls day, I'd like to remind all Traditional Catholics in Canada the debt that they owe to Fr. Yves Normandin (RIP). Fr. Normandin stepped into the breach in the 1970's offering the Tridentine Mass across Canada for close to a decade before returning to his diocese for a number years before returning to the SSPX. I had the grace to visit him in Quebec twice and each time left with a greater appreciation of the fruits of his efforts. All of us 'old-timers' probably remembers Masses in Chapels, Homes, Halls, Funeral Homes, and event convention centres. I make the assertion that this laid the ground for all the Traditional Mass Communities, SSPX, FSSP, Diocesan and others. Probably a pretty safe assertion! In addition to praying for the repose of the Soul of Fr. Normandin, I'd ask you also pray for the repose of the soul of his Mother.  I remember seeing her picture once and everyone has a Mom and she is worthy of our prayers for producing such a so...

If Pope Francis is bad - what about Pope St. John Paul II et al?

+ JMJ So here we are on the apparent cusp of yet another post conciliar Papal canonization. This time we have Pope's John-Paul I and Paul VI canonizations to 'look forward' to. This follows, obviously, on the heels of Pope St. John Paul II's canonization? So the first question that I usually encounter is: How is it possible, keeping in mind the doctrine on infallibility of canonizations (note doctrine not dogma), that Pope St. John Paul II is a Saint? First, what does it mean???  According to the doctrine of dogmatic facts - it is the universal opinion of Theologians that canonizations are infallible.  It means that they enjoy the beatific vision.  ... that's it.  That is the doctrine and it is at the level of universal opinion of theologians.  It is called a 'dogmatic fact'. That they made mistakes is obvious.  That the miracles seem to not be very miraculous is also a bit of an issue. Here's something to consider: The rush that surrou...

SSPX: Requiescat in Pace - Nov. Devotions

+ JMJ Recently, the St. Gertrude prayer was recommended to me and given my devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, I thought it a good inclusion in the morning prayers and post it here for as a reminder for November - the Month of the Holy Souls. P^3 Courtesy of SSPX.org “Forget not the dead and hasten to pray for them!” - such is the Church's recommendation, beautifully summarized by St. Augustine. In Purgatory until the End of the World Our Lady Herself referred to Purgatory when, at the first Fatima apparition in May 1917, she was asked by Lucia about the souls of two young village girls who had recently died. The Virgin answered that the first one, Maria das Nevas, who died when about 16 years of age, was in Heaven. But of Amelia, a young lady of 18 years at her death, "will be in purgatory until the end of the world.” The disclosure about Amelia’s prolonged period of expiation never fails to shock and trouble. We are so easily misled to believe that Heaven is our natura...

The News is an Addiction ...

+ JMJ People seem to be mesmerised by train wrecks.   They just can't turn away as the disaster creeps forward along train tracks towards the crossing where a car, truck, bus, trailer awaits its destruction. Trads have been watching the train wreck that is this crisis of the Catholic Church for decades. The trade war between the Canada and the US has reminded me that the news is addictive.   The first time I was addicted what from 2009 to  2014 when I was closely following the Rome / SSPX discussions.  I was at work watching a live-stream as Bishop Fellay disappeared into the Vatican. The lead-up to this moment had been intense as the 'resistance' got freaked out and the cultural cracks between doctrine and conspiracy theory widened. In the decade since then other things have emerged, wars, rumours of wars, conspiracies, celebrity Catholics etc. Now we have a new addiction and its name is Trump. Lately, no matter how much I try, I find myself wonderin...
