Infovaticana: Fernández resists correcting the legal ambiguities of the excommunication decree against the FSSPX (Be Careful What You Ask For!)

JMJ

Well this is ... as always ... interesting...

The Dicastery for Legislative Texts has attempted on several occasions to collaborate with the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith to resolve the legal contradictions that arose following the decree of excommunication against the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX), published on July 2. However, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Doctrine of the Faith, does not appear willing to accept such collaboration, according to journalist Guido Horst in the German Catholic newspaper Die Tagespost.

Infovaticana: Fernández resists correcting the legal ambiguities of the excommunication decree against the FSSPX

I can see a few potential reasons for how we arrived with the obviously flawed decrees on the SSPX:

  1. Incompetence: The authors were so incompetent that they simply plagarized the 1988 declaration with the note from the 1990's.
    1. If this is the case, it makes sense that Cardinal CMF wouldn't want to be corrected by another dicastry.
    2. Very reminiscent of Pope Francis I's refusal to respond to the Dubia.
  2. Plausible Deniability: The ambiguities are deliberate and designed to give someone (Pope Leo XIV?) room to see how things play out with the SSPX and the networks within Rome ... then take action in the 'real' direction at a later time.
    1. The documents used all predate and ignore the developments of the 2000's with gaps in logic and process so large that people lacking degrees in theology and canon law can see clearer than those that blindly believe what they want to believe.
    2. Those emboldened by the apparent refutation of Tradition are exposing their true nature and intent by their actions.
    3. What remains unknown in all this are explicit actions on the part of Pope Leo XIV.  Is he a Royal Protector of the Church and Faithful Traditional Catholics (SSPX et al) or an Apex Predator hell bent on the all consuming Spirit of Vatican II.
  3. Malicious Intent: It's all a trap that leaves Traditional Catholics open to persecution.
    1. Eventually (ie next two - 3 years) will see continual exclusion and isolation of Traditional Catholics until the cages in the 'Zoo' are complete and the captive Traditional Catholics, not realizing they are in a Cage within the Church, accept the scraps that are tossed to them while criticizing the actions of those Catholics still free to act.
  4. Other: People are not complicated, they are complex. Stuff is going to happen.
    1. Complicated indicates a significant degree of predictability.
    2. Complex means that for every input a different output can and is likely to occur.
    3. The Church is made up of human beings (suffering for Original Sin) who should be better, but history (1000's of years) has shown time and again that seldom do they live up to our expectations.
    4. So we need to continue study the Faith (Bible, Liturgy, Teachings, Orthodox Authors - like Ott etc), feed our Spiritual Life, and follow the Core Catholic principles embedded in the Virtues of Catholic Life.

So effectively, nothing changes until something changes.  The changes to watch for are how Rome treats the SSPX.

They are the canary in the coal mine.

News Roundup: October 19, 2026

+ JMJ Well ... I was looking in my blog drafts and found this list from after my News is an Addiction post. So ... yep ... not totally able to disconnect from the news world at this point.  Frankly, I haven't read all of these articles - they catch my eye as I check for SSPX news regarding the exco's etc. So let's consider these topics as part of a higher level chronicle. They may not be key inflection points but helps to understand the flow of the world as perceived by the authors and myself who captured them as a snapshot in time. The Debt Canadian Traditional Catholics Owe to Fr. Yves Normandin (RIP)

+ JMJ On this All Souls day, I'd like to remind all Traditional Catholics in Canada the debt that they owe to Fr. Yves Normandin (RIP). Fr. Normandin stepped into the breach in the 1970's offering the Tridentine Mass across Canada for close to a decade before returning to his diocese for a number years before returning to the SSPX. I had the grace to visit him in Quebec twice and each time left with a greater appreciation of the fruits of his efforts. All of us 'old-timers' probably remembers Masses in Chapels, Homes, Halls, Funeral Homes, and event convention centres. I make the assertion that this laid the ground for all the Traditional Mass Communities, SSPX, FSSP, Diocesan and others. Probably a pretty safe assertion! In addition to praying for the repose of the Soul of Fr. Normandin, I'd ask you also pray for the repose of the soul of his Mother.  I remember seeing her picture once and everyone has a Mom and she is worthy of our prayers for producing such a so...

If Pope Francis is bad - what about Pope St. John Paul II et al?

+ JMJ So here we are on the apparent cusp of yet another post conciliar Papal canonization. This time we have Pope's John-Paul I and Paul VI canonizations to 'look forward' to. This follows, obviously, on the heels of Pope St. John Paul II's canonization? So the first question that I usually encounter is: How is it possible, keeping in mind the doctrine on infallibility of canonizations (note doctrine not dogma), that Pope St. John Paul II is a Saint? First, what does it mean???  According to the doctrine of dogmatic facts - it is the universal opinion of Theologians that canonizations are infallible.  It means that they enjoy the beatific vision.  ... that's it.  That is the doctrine and it is at the level of universal opinion of theologians.  It is called a 'dogmatic fact'. That they made mistakes is obvious.  That the miracles seem to not be very miraculous is also a bit of an issue. Here's something to consider: The rush that surrou...

SSPX: Requiescat in Pace - Nov. Devotions

+ JMJ Recently, the St. Gertrude prayer was recommended to me and given my devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, I thought it a good inclusion in the morning prayers and post it here for as a reminder for November - the Month of the Holy Souls. P^3 Courtesy of SSPX.org “Forget not the dead and hasten to pray for them!” - such is the Church's recommendation, beautifully summarized by St. Augustine. In Purgatory until the End of the World Our Lady Herself referred to Purgatory when, at the first Fatima apparition in May 1917, she was asked by Lucia about the souls of two young village girls who had recently died. The Virgin answered that the first one, Maria das Nevas, who died when about 16 years of age, was in Heaven. But of Amelia, a young lady of 18 years at her death, "will be in purgatory until the end of the world.” The disclosure about Amelia’s prolonged period of expiation never fails to shock and trouble. We are so easily misled to believe that Heaven is our natura...

The News is an Addiction ...

+ JMJ People seem to be mesmerised by train wrecks.   They just can't turn away as the disaster creeps forward along train tracks towards the crossing where a car, truck, bus, trailer awaits its destruction. Trads have been watching the train wreck that is this crisis of the Catholic Church for decades. The trade war between the Canada and the US has reminded me that the news is addictive.   The first time I was addicted what from 2009 to  2014 when I was closely following the Rome / SSPX discussions.  I was at work watching a live-stream as Bishop Fellay disappeared into the Vatican. The lead-up to this moment had been intense as the 'resistance' got freaked out and the cultural cracks between doctrine and conspiracy theory widened. In the decade since then other things have emerged, wars, rumours of wars, conspiracies, celebrity Catholics etc. Now we have a new addiction and its name is Trump. Lately, no matter how much I try, I find myself wonderin...
