CMTV: Ms. Niles ... please just the facts ma'am

Just the facts ma'am

I have been looking for a word that best captures CMTV's 'brand' of journalism.

So far, the best I've heard is tabloid (h/t SSPX).

The following caught my eye because of my fact checking:
... He cut a plea deal with the prosecutor, who agreed to drop several charges in exchange for his guilty plea, leading to a 10-year prison sentence. Palmeri is currently serving time for his crimes.

Here's what I found in less than 1hr of web searches - along with some commentary:
  • Apparently the accuser withdrew the accusations at the original time and that this probably why there were no charges pressed.
    • This was posted on a forum by someone in the town after the CMTV article was posted.
  • The above contradicts the claim that she "didn't know she was a victim until she was 19 years old".
    • Something that I find highly unusual for a woman who, I assume, grew up in a traditional family.  There's probably more to this aspect of the story.
  • The actual charge for which he was found guilty was "Aggravated Indecent Liberties/Child LT14;Fondling" Kansas Department of Corrections Repository
    • Interesting that CMTV neglected to include the actual decision of the courts.
  • That a number of charges were dismissed due to the expiration of the statute of limitations and that the Judge denied a motion to have them reinstated.  Judge Denies Motion
    • This report contradicts the 'plea deal' report as noted above.
  • CMTV also makes techno-gaffs.   "... (whose name is being withheld to protect her privacy) in a recent Facebook comment confirming the account".
    • CMTV "tried" to protect the identity of the victim's facebook post on their website.  They should pay more attention to the filenames of their posted images.  Her identity is blown, although apparently the locals already know her name.
    • They didn't talk directly with the victim. Given that they overlooked other reputable items, it looks like they need to include a fact-checking department as well as an identity-protection department.
  • One other thing I noticed is the picture of Mr. Palmeri (see below).  Look carefully and what do you see? He's wearing both a scapular and a rosary around his neck. It doesn't mean he's innocent, I am just happy that even at this point, he still seems to have the faith.

In the end, it would be nice to know where the truth ends and CMTV's bias begins, but they don't appear to want to find the truth.

Next time Ms.Niles starts story telling someone should stop her and say: Just the facts ma'am, leave out all your colour commentary.

The Curious Case of Steve Skojec and the Dangers of Deep Diving into the Crisis Sub-Titled: The Failings of Others

+ JMJ It's been a while now since Steve Skojec sold 1P5 and abandoned the Catholic Faith. I've been a 'Trad' since 1982 and in those 40+ years I seen this death-spiral before with a similar end point. It seems that anyone who jumps into the fray unprepared for the enormous task of righting wrongs will, eventually, become discouraged by not the task but the people who surround them.   I remember when Skojec complained of the treatment his family received from a traditional priest.  This seems to have been the start of the end for him. So what can we learn from the likes of Steve Skojec, Michael Voris (maybe?), Louie Verrecchio, Gerry Matatix and other celebrity Catholics? Probably quite a lot about what not to do. First, don't burn out on the crisis?  When you burn out, on work or anything else, little things assume a more greater importance than they are due.   This is one of my 'canary in the coal mine' signals that I've been stretching myself too thin

What the heck is a congregation of "Pontifical Right"

+ JMJ In a discussion with a friend the question occurred to me that I didn't actually know was is involved in being a religious order of 'pontifical right'. I had a vague notion that this meant they reported to Rome as opposed to the local diocese. I'm also aware that, according to the accounts I have heard, the Archbishop received 'praise' and the written direction to incardinate priests directly into the SSPX.  This is interesting because it implies that the SSPX priests were no longer required to incardinate in the local diocese but in the SSPX. This is something that belongs to an order of 'pontifical right'. Anyway here's some definitions: Di diritto pontificio is the Italian term for “of pontifical right” . It is given to the ecclesiastical institutions (the religious and secular institutes, societies of apostolic life) either created by the Holy See or approved by it with the formal decree, known by its Latin name, Decretu

Morning and Evening and other sundry Prayers

+ JMJ Along the theme of P^3 (Prayer, Penance, Patience), and for my own reference ... here is a collection of Morning and Evening prayers from the Ideal Daily Missal along with some additional prayers. In this crisis of the Church, I do not think it is possible to do too much prayer, penance and have patience. P^3

Kuala Lumpur warns faithful about the SSPX

+ JMJ A couple of humorous perspectives: Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SSPX), a chapel not recognized by the Archdiocese I guess they are no longer able to recognize what is authentically Catholic vs inculturated ... :-) The views of the SSPX also dissent from the teachings of the Second Vatican Council This is a little outdated ... I wish I knew what exactly they are talking about and how to square the circle with pre-conciliar Catholic Teaching. and they have serious questions about the order of mass promulgated by Pope St. Paul VI Darn tooting they are serious questions, I'm glad they have admitted that the questions posed by the SSPX are serious and meriting a serious answer. But we already know the answer to one of them:   As for the use of the 1962 Missal as a Forma extraordinaria of the liturgy of the Mass, I would like to draw attention to the fact that this Missal was never juridically abrogated and, consequently, in principle, was always p
