Travelling, blogging and sense making

JMJ

I've been travelling quite a bit of late, hence the dearth of postings.

However, looking at the news streams I've picked out the following threads:

SSPX / Rome Relations

Last week reports appeared on various 'resistance' and psychotic forums that Rome had sent the SSPX an agreement of some type to review.  Gloria TV news has reported a confirmation by Fr. Schmidberger of the receipt of a proposal but that there is a lot (as usual) to clarify.

The 'resistance' forums are a flitter with speculation etc.

As usual there is a fair amount of  speculation of what Bishop Fellay will do and what is 'all means'.

Here's my take:

  1. The last chapter of the SSPX concluded with the establishment of how the final decision on a regularization offer from Rome would be made and what the conditions were for its consideration (The first three being sine qua non):
    1. The freedom to preserve, transmit and teach the sound doctrine of the constant Magisterium of the Church and of the unchangeable truth of divine Tradition; the freedom to prohibit, correct and reprove, even publicly, those who foment the errors or innovations of modernism, liberalism, the Second Vatican Council and their consequences;
    2. The freedom to use the 1962 liturgy exclusively. To preserve the sacramental practice that we presently have (including: Holy Orders, Confirmation, Matrimony);
    3. A guarantee of at least one bishop.
    4. Society should have its own tribunals, in the first instance,
    5. Exemption of houses of the SSPX from the diocesan bishops,
    6. A Pontifical Commission in Rome for Tradition “answering directly to the Pope, with the majority of its members and governing board in favor of Tradition.”
    7. Note: I understand that the last three conditions had already been granted in previous offers so they were not listed as sine qua non.
  2. The SSPX is not sedevacantist and continue to believe that the Pope et al are in the positions of authority and therefore a legitimate command, following True Obedience, would necessitate compliance.
  3. Speculation remains simply a fantasy cooked up in feverish minds.  The minds of the 'resistance' have been on boil from 2000 until 2011 and high boil ever since.  Until something happens, nothing has happened. There is no 'canonical regularization' at this time.
  4. I am not surprised at continuing to and fro for the following reasons:
    1. To break off relations is to go down the path of the 'resistance' and sedevacantists. (see #2 above).
    2. Much is happening in the Church under this pontificate, most of it appears to be bad.  Some have realized this and come to the conclusion that perhaps the position of the SSPX is actually correct.
    3. I have heard that Cardinal Mueller's opinion of the SSPX was altered by the events of last year's Synod and that the alteration has continued since then and possibly accelerated due to the events of this year's Synod.

Rise of Islam

There is an escalation of Islamic derived conflict.  In other words, look at the major conflicts and you will find that it is between an Islamic oriented group and someone else.

In short, they are the common denominator in this situation.  The West is involved in a religious war and doesn't realize it.  They are fighting an immaterial idea with material weapons.

In short - they're pooched.

Please don't assume that I believe that armed force should not be used to defend against an armed aggressor such as Daesh/ISIS.

I just believe that bombs alone will not win this war. A war that has been simmering for decades of decades.

No, the weapon that the West is not using is the Rosary.

If the Pope really wants to end the war, then he needs to call for a Rosary Crusade for the conversion of the Muslim.

Then much will change.

Pope Francis the Pacifist

Interestingly the Pope in the face of the attacks is still calling for an end to war etc.  Using his insults as only he can (Pope Francis' Little Book of Insults), he is labeling the defense industries.

Looking at what is happened in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, I suspect that they are going to make him eat his words. I hope he has a Pius IX moment and consecrates Russia as Our Lady asked.

Next Steps

So what is a person to do?

  1. "A guarantee of at least one bishop"

I'd feel more comfortable with at least two.

    1. Personally, given the need, I would like to see 5 more bishops - preferably younger ones!

What is Tradition?

+ JMJ What Is Tradition? The basic premise, from my perspective, is that what was taught before cannot be contradicted by the 'present' magisterium, only deepened and expanded upon. I recall the Roman theologians called the SSPX protestants while the SSPX called them modernists.  I believe this was all surrounding the concept of Traditon. SSPX's Understanding of Tradition One accusation made against the SSPX is that they don't have a correct understanding of 'Tradition'.  This is how the SSPX understands Tradition: I finally profess that Tradition is not a dead memory, but the living transmission of the doctrine received from the Apostles. It remains living, in distinction to Revelation, which is closed. It is so both in the activity of the Magisterium of the Teaching Church and in the profession of Faith of the Church Taught, of which the sentire cum Ecclesia is the result of the teaching of the Magisterium. Tradition may be called ‘living’, not in the sense t...

SSPX.ca: What is the position of the SSPX on Vatican II???

+ JMJ With all the mis-information about the SSPX rejecting the Second Vatican Council, I thought it would be useful to publish an article that focuses on the real issues that the SSPX has identified. Update: Why Did the SSPX Consecrate Bishops? ( Neither Schismatic, Nor Disobedient link ) In the linked document the SSPX outlined the key motivation and core issues with Vatican II and the post-conciliar magisterium (see above link for full document): 4. The Society Acted Precisely Because of the State of Necessity in Which the Faith Finds Itself  In the present situation of the Church, if the Society of Saint Pius X had not carried out the consecrations of July 1st, it would have found itself facing an inevitable alternative: either to disappear gradually, or to accept, at least in fact, the new liturgy as well as the false doctrines of Vatican II and the post-council. Without the consecrations of July 1st, the Fraternity would have found itself, in a few years, without bishop...

Thoughts on: Finding Common Ground Between Rome and the SSPX

+ JMJ In the ramp up to the consecrations the noise floor in the intergnat grew to a constant din.  This was one of the few the peeped its signal over the noise. https://crisismagazine.com/opinion/finding-common-ground-between-rome-and-the-sspx The key issue is contained in this paragraph: In the lead-up to the planned July 1, 2026, episcopal consecrations,  the SSPX rejected Rome’s offer  of doctrinal dialogue on the grounds that “we both know in advance that we cannot agree doctrinally, particularly regarding the fundamental orientations adopted since the Second Vatican Council.” Fr. Pagliarani also said that his previous attempt at dialogue in 2019 was shut down by Rome because of an assumed irreconcilability. It seems that, from the Society’s perspective, and perhaps from Rome’s too, their positions are incompatible. If memory serves, Rome killed any opportunity for an open discussion by stating that Vatican II was not up for debate. So it was a still-birth and ...

Thoughts on the Thoughts of a former SSPX priest

+ JMJ Well Gary Campbell, former SSPX Priest and now laicised has posted a new article on WherePeterIs. https://wherepeteris.com/thoughts-of-a-former-sspx-priest-on-the-july-1-consecrations/ These words stuck out: Heck, they have built a five-star hotel, wine bar, and Walmart on the opposite bank of the Rubicon! They are not in danger of entering a state of schism, for they are  already  in a state of schism. I believe he doth protest too much. All the actual facts indicate that the SSPX was not in a state of schism before July 1st and an examination of the decree of excommunication highlights the either ineptitude of those in charge or a desire to leave the barn door open. The chasm between an act of disobedience and act of schism remains just what is has always been - an inconvenient barrier that person(s) in Rome seek to bridge but appear incapable of succeeding. The SSPX re-stated that they recognize the Pope as the Vicar of Christ and feel obliged by conscience...

The News is an Addiction ...

+ JMJ People seem to be mesmerised by train wrecks.   They just can't turn away as the disaster creeps forward along train tracks towards the crossing where a car, truck, bus, trailer awaits its destruction. Trads have been watching the train wreck that is this crisis of the Catholic Church for decades. The trade war between the Canada and the US has reminded me that the news is addictive.   The first time I was addicted what from 2009 to  2014 when I was closely following the Rome / SSPX discussions.  I was at work watching a live-stream as Bishop Fellay disappeared into the Vatican. The lead-up to this moment had been intense as the 'resistance' got freaked out and the cultural cracks between doctrine and conspiracy theory widened. In the decade since then other things have emerged, wars, rumours of wars, conspiracies, celebrity Catholics etc. Now we have a new addiction and its name is Trump. Lately, no matter how much I try, I find myself wonderin...
