Communiqué on the Meeting between Cardinal Ladaria and Fr. Pagliarani

+
JMJ

I suspect that the 'resistance' will be freaking out about this ... but as with the Archbishop, when Rome calls ... they go ... even if just to let them know (again) why they do what they do.

Concerning the alleged 'sell-out' I have this to say:

I should update the meme ... with 2017, 18 etc.

The 'resistors' should stop and think a little:
  1. We are in the 18th year of the latest sell-out frenzy. So we're still waiting.
  2. Try and reconcile the 'resistance' positions with the Catholic Faith. If it doesn't objectively sync up - admit that you're wrong and take appropriate action.

I have also attached some commentary from CFN.

Communiqué from the General House of the Society of Saint Pius X concerning the Nov. 22, 2018 meeting between Cardinal Ladaria and Fr. Pagliarani

On Thursday, November 22, 2018, Fr. David Pagliarani, Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, traveled to Rome at the invitation of Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He was accompanied by Fr. Emmanuel du Chalard. Cardinal Ladaria was assisted by Archbishop Guido Pozzo, Secretary of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei.
The meeting took place in the offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Its purpose was to allow Cardinal Ladaria and Fr. Pagliarani to meet for the first time and together to take stock of the relations between the Holy See and the Society of Saint Pius X since the election of its new Superior General last July.

During the meeting with the Roman authorities, it was recalled that the fundamental problem is actually doctrinal, and neither the Society nor Rome can escape this fact. Because of this irreducible doctrinal divergence, for the past seven years no attempt to compose a draft of a doctrinal statement acceptable to both parties has succeeded. This is why the doctrinal question remains absolutely essential.

The Holy See says the same when it solemnly declares that no canonical status can be established for the Society until after the signing of a doctrinal document.

Therefore, everything impels the Society to resume theological discussions with the awareness that the Good Lord does not necessarily ask the Society to convince its interlocutors, but rather to bear unconditional witness to the faith in the sight of the Church.

The future of the Society is in the hands of Providence and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, as is demonstrated by its whole history, from the Society's foundation to this day.

The members of the Society want nothing else but to serve the Church and to cooperate effectively in her regeneration, to the point of giving their lives for her triumph if necessary. But they can choose neither the manner, nor the terms, nor the moment of what belongs to God alone.

SPX Superior General Father Davide Pagliarni meets with Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith [Updated]

The General House of the Society of St. Pius X announced by Communiqué (available at present only in French [Updated: English version is now available here]) that the Superior General of the SSPX, Father Davide Pagliarani met with, and at the invitation of, Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer, the Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on November 22, 2018. The Superior General was accompanied by Father Emmanuel du Chalard and the Cardinal was joined by Monsignor Guido Pozzo, Secretary of the Ecclesia Dei Commission.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the Cardinal to meet with the newly elected (July of 2018) Superior General of the SSPX who will serve in this capacity for twelve years. The meeting lasted for 2 hours and was held in the Congregation’s offices in Rome.

The Communiqué makes clear that the primary concern of the SSPX, and hence the primary obstacle to a juridical solution to the unjust persecution of the Society, is the defense of and witness to the perennial doctrines of the Faith. The Communiqué states that the “doctrinal question remains absolutely fundamental (“la question doctrinale reste absolument primordiale”). The Communiqué makes clear that the SSPX and Rome have been unable to agree the text of a doctrinal declaration that the SSPX could sign for seven years (since the conclusion of a round of doctrinal discussions ordered by Pope Benedict XVI) because of an irreducible doctrinal divergence (“divergence doctrinale irréductible“) between the parties. Such a statement makes clear that the differences are not merely diplomatic nor linguistic. It is not a problem of finding the right words. There is truly a doctrinal divergence between the Roman authorities insistence on the continuity between the novelties of and flowing from the Second Vatican Council and the perennial doctrine of the Church to which the SSPX remains faithful. The Holy See reaffirmed that no juridical solution would occur without the SSPX signing a document of a doctrinal character. Since the Roman authorities have insisted in every draft of such a document that the SSPX accept the orthodoxy of the documents of Vatican II and the legitimacy of the Novus Ordo Missae and other changes following the Council, no document has been accepted by the SSPX for seven years.

The Communiqué indicates that further doctrinal discussions may commence but clarifies the expectations of the SSPX. The Superior General recognizes that God may be calling the SSPX to engage in the discussions of the doctrinal ruptures not necessarily to persuade the Roman authorities of the truth of the perennial doctrine but to provide to the whole Church an uncompromising witness to the Faith. (“de porter devant l’Eglise le témoignage inconditionné de la foi.”). The members of the Society reaffirm that they stand ready even to give their very lives for this public witness to the Faith.

The carefully chosen wording of the Communiqué demonstrates that the Superior General has a very profound and realistic attitude toward relations with Rome. He makes clear that the SSPX will not sacrifice their witness to the Faith for a resolution of juridical injustice. Yet, he is open to continued conversations with the Roman authorities but again without giving a false hope of any particular outcome. Even if the Society theologians fail to persuade the Roman authorities to return to Tradition, a likely outcome humanly speaking, the efforts are not in vain for they give to the whole Church a witness to the Faith. The SSPX by continuing the discussions remains the stumbling block to the total abandonment of Tradition by the Church. The Superior General recognizes that the “means, the terms, and the moment” of the return of Rome to Tradition remain ultimately in God’s hands, not his own. Yet, as he waits for the fullness of time to arrive, he will continue to lead the Society on the path of public witness to the Faith even at cost of their lives.

One would hope that the critics of the Society who have claimed that an unacceptable compromise with Rome that would betray the Faith was imminent would finally after seven years accept that they may have been too hasty in their judgment. This latest Communiqué is a sure sign that the Superior General remains fully committed to the path cleared by the Archbishop with respect to Rome. Do not submit to novelty and error but continue to go to Rome to witness to the Faith.

  1. Hi Tradicat
Talking about compromise just wondering what your take is on the Calgary school policy signed by Fr C. Do you think he signed it without Menzingen's approval?

    1. You are a little behind the times and have missed the key question that you should have asked: Did he know about the contents of the policy to which you allude?

Given that those policies are now removed, it is a moot point.

The Catholic Church and the Rule of Law- Part II: Dr. John Lamont

+ JMJ This is the second article from Dr. Lamont from his lecture given in May 2014. P^3 Source Part A: Society of St. Hugh of Cluny Source Part B: Society of St. Hugh of Cluny 8 May2014 The Catholic Church and the Rule of Law- Part II By John Lamont To understand how the Jesuit conception of obedience departed from earlier conceptions, it is helpful to compare it with the teaching of St. Thomas on obedience. The fundamental difference between the two is that St. Thomas considers the proper object of obedience to be the precept of the superior (2a2ae q. 104 a. 2 co., ad 3). Obedience that seeks to forestall the expressed will of the superior does not bear on what the superior wants or thinks in general, but only on what the superior intends to command. St. Ignatius’s lowest degree of obedience, which he does not consider to be virtuous, is thus what St. Thomas considers to be the only form of obedience. St. Thomas holds that St. Ignatius’s alleged higher forms of o...

Morning and Evening and other sundry Prayers

+ JMJ Along the theme of P^3 (Prayer, Penance, Patience), and for my own reference ... here is a collection of Morning and Evening prayers from the Ideal Daily Missal along with some additional prayers. Rome and the SSPX - Version 2026 Part 6b: Principles and Rules for Surviving this Crisis of the Catholic Church (Principle 1)

+ JMJ Principle 1: Realize that something is amiss in the Catholic Church The world in which I had my Traditional Awakening, is one in which practically anything pre-Conciliar such as liturgy, doctrinc, and even dogmas are either suppressed, ignored or re-framed to be acceptable to the ‘world’. What is more, the people adhering to these pre-conciliar teachings and liturgy are persecuted by other members of the Catholic Church. The things that non-Trads say about Trads can be quite extreme. For example, accusations against Traditionalists include that they are: A revival of the Jansenists (link) , Schismatics, Heretics, Uncharitable, Lefebrists Radicals Integrists When one group of Catholics is persecuted by the others for simply wanting to live as Catholics before them did for generations … well something is wrong. Further, we need to realize that when what was previously condemned is now promoted and what was previously promoted as the trut...

News Roundup: June 13, 2026

+ JMJ So the world continues to spin and break apart - metaphorically. One item that I think I forgot to mention was that the Catholic Family News ceased publication (link) . I met John Vennari at the seminary in Winona where after some discussion he gave me permission to repost articles.  That CFN carried on for eight years after his passing is a testimony to the need for good reporting and articles. I still have over a dozen of his CDs and his ability to see the crisis for what it was and yet be grateful was an example worth following. Along this line of thinking, you'll notice a few links from articles posted on Unam Catholicam. This blog / website is run by an Philip Campbell and provides clear thinking on many topics. I respect his thoughts on the SSPX - even though I don't necessarily agree with many - I can respect his opinions on the matter. NB: This roundup contains some articles that are against Traditionalism and the SSPX. It is always good to have an idea of what...

Open Letter to Cardinal Gantin - July 6, 1988

There has been some discussion (read lots) about the term 'Conciliar Church'. I have posted this letter written by the Superior General and District Superiors of the SSPX after the 1988 Consecrations. Of particular interest is that the 'Conciliar Church' being referred to as a system. My paraphrase would be that the SSPX regards the 'conciliar Church' as an error within the Church.
