Ecumenism: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Original SSPX.ca Article from 2014)

Can't we all just get along?  Well that depends on where the gaps are between people's principles, value and perspective.

If one tries to get along by glossing over the gaps, then it is like walking in the Antarctic Ice Fields without safety equipment.

Eventually, you will fall through the thin layer of ice and plummet to your demise.

Ecumenism: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Modernists have a tendency of taking a perfectly Catholic word and applying a new non-Catholic meaning to it.  The word 'Ecumenism' has suffered the same fate and as a result there are now three types of Ecumenism: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The Good Ecumenism

An example of the Good Ecumenism can be found in the encyclical of Pius XI - Mortalium Animos (1928) in articles 10:

So, Venerable Brethren, it is clear why this Apostolic See has never allowed its subjects to take part in the assemblies of non-Catholics: for the union of Christians can only be promoted by promoting the return to the one true Church of Christ of those who are separated from it, for in the past they have unhappily left it. To the one true Church of Christ, we say, which is visible to all, and which is to remain, according to the will of its Author, exactly the same as He instituted it.

Similar pleas have been made by Leo XIII, Pius XII and other pontiffs up to the Second Vatican Council.

In the present age of the Church, this is commonly called the "Ecumenism of return".  This is the Good.

The Bad Ecumenism

In the late 19th and early 20th century, a movement with the desire to achieve 'Christian Unity' was founded.  While the members of this movement were well intentioned, the organization was founded upon flawed principles.   It is these flawed principles that Pius XI condemned in Mortalium Animos, particularly since equally well-meaning Catholics were beginning to participate in the movement.  These principles were so flawed that Pius XI called them "a most grave error, by which the foundations of the Catholic faith are completely destroyed".   In short, the movement made a distinction between fundamental truths and optional truths.

As this form of Ecumenism was outside the Church of Christ, it is The Bad.

The Ugly Ecumenism

The third form of Ecumenism is, for all purposes, identical to 'The Bad'.  The key difference is that, like a virus, it has infected the Mystical Body of Christ,  the "true Church of Jesus Christ,  which is the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church" (Mystici Corporis - Pius XII).

Cardinals Kasper and Koch are normally the first people mentioned when looking for symptoms of this viral infection. However, recently a group of SSPX faithful from Winnipeg were able to hear for themselves the first lecture given by Professor Catherine E. Clifford.  In this lecture they were provided an example of how Ecumenism currently manifests itself within the Bride of Christ.

In the first lecture it was made clear that Ecumenism within the Church had shifted from "Ecumenism of return" to "Ecumenism of recognition". In the second lecture on 'Where is the Church of Christ', Prof. Clifford sounded the alarm that there has occurred a "subtle slippage ... [back] to an ecumenism of return, to one that is more ecclesial and Roman centric than the Christo centric ecumenism of recognition fostered by the Second Vatican Council."

Herein lies the problem, how can one have Christo centric ecumenism without reference to the One, Holy, Catholic and Roman Catholic Church that Christ founded?  According to Catholic Dogma, one cannot.

This form of Ecumenism has marred the clear face of the Church of Christ. This Ecumenism is simply: The Ugly.

News Roundup: July 11, 2025

+ JMJ This has been an interesting month for news ... First we had the leaking of the 2021 report on what I would call the "Survey of Tradition".  Not surprisingly, the report was generally positive and Pope Francis ... for whatever reason ... still proceeded with Traditionis Custodes.  Andrea Grillo is not pleased with this turn of affairs. I suspect that the 'leaking' of the report is a symptom of a course correction.  Time will tell as this pontificate unfolds.  I am still curious to hear if the SSPX Superiour General will be invited to Rome this summer while the Pope reclaims the Castel Gandolfo.   That is my critical success indicator for whether or not Catholics can really consider the pontificate of Pope Francis (RIP) are truly an aberration of the past. Then we have the firing of John-Henry Westen from Life Site News.  I have no idea what happened to cause the board coup - - - as close a the vote was - he is now out of LFN.  There is...

Rome, the SSPX and this time of Crisis - Updated

+ JMJ Obviously there's lots of events right now. First we have the April 1st - I almost thought it was April Fools - meeting between Pope Francis and Bishop Fellay.  Nothing really news worthy as this is a natural progression as Rome appears to be considering fulfilling Archbishop Lefebvre's wish to 'accept us as we are'. Second we have the April 8th publication of what will be a verbose exhortation of the Synod of the Family. I'm willing to bet that the Pope will give with one hand (unilateral regularization of SSPX) and take with the other (ambiguous document that opens the flood gates of sin further). Much to pray for. News Roundup: May 13, 2026

+ JMJ Introduction I have set this article to post on May 13th, the anniversary of the first of six apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima. Fatima while a historical fact, still seems to point to the future.  Has the consecration been done according to her wishes?  Will another Pope do it again in the face of a world going mad and slipping into the same conditions that fostered two great wars? I don't know.  But I pray that the message of Fatima to repent and do penance is heard in the hearts of Catholics every where.  We carry the light to the world and need to illuminate the 'The Way'. The Catholic Church Obviously, the death of Pope Francis I and the election of Pope Leo XIV is a major development in the Catholic Church and the World. Just what the immediate outcomes of these two events will take some time.  I strongly suspect that there will be no calls of Santo Subito for Pope Francis.  If there is and if they do canonize Pope Francis ....

A Reply to Martin Blackshaw’s FLAWED Remnant article titled: FLAWED: SSPX Advice on Abortion-tainted Vaccines

+ JMJ    An article has appeared in the Remnant (link to article) and I am afraid that there are a number of flaws in it that need to be addressed. The author, Martin Blackshaw, believes that both the Church and the SSPX are misapplying the principle of Moral Theology called 'Cooperation In Evil'.  Unfortunately, Mr. Blackshaw rests most of his arguments on citing authors that support his position, without considering the possibility that they are wrong. This highlights a key factor in this crisis: ignorance of the faith and its application . I don't am not singling out Mr. Blackshaw for this criticism, I have observed that it applies to laity and religious, superior and subject a like.  No one seems immune in this enduring crisis, myself included.  I further believe that this ignorance is why so many Catholics, both traditional and non, rely on their gut feeling or "Catholic conscience" for charting their way through this crisis of the faith.  While...
