Knowledge and Wisdom

 +

JMJ

I had the following thought a while ago as I read yet another article of the sad state of the world and the viral death spiral of the various humans stuck in the doom loop.

Man amasses knowledge yet learns nothing. A empty shell with no wisdom.

I'm not certain how to break this down. So ... this I will be relying on the principle of progressive elaboration.

Someone can learn how to use a handgun - that is knowledge.  Then they can decide whether or not to shoot at a steel plate beside them.  That is where wisdom / judgement comes into play.

Those with wisdom know the risks of a ricochet coming back at you. The sound of a bullet twirling in the air as it comes back at you is not comforting, it is terrifying.  The wise man or woman doesn't take the risk.

So the fact is that we are in the midst of one of the worst crises of the Catholic Church. That is probably the worst part - we are surrounded by every aspect of this crisis. The perspective of experience is not available to us. We can't tell if we're nearer the beginning, middle or end.  Without that perspective the only tools we have are the Virtues (link), Dogmas and Doctrines (link) and Principles (link).

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting it on a fruit salad

So we use all of the above to give us perspective and one final ingredient: A full spiritual cup (link)

Once you have the ingredients then you will know the difference between Wisdom and Knowledge.

Comparision of the Tridentine, Cranmer and Novus Ordo Masses

+ JMJ I downloaded the comparison that was linked in the previous article on the mass (here) . ... a very good reference! P^3 From: Whispers of Restoration (available at this link) . CHARTING LITURGICAL CHANGE Comparing the 1962 Ordinary of the Roman Mass to changes made during the Anglican Schism; Compared in turn to changes adopted in the creation of Pope Paul VI’s Mass in 1969 The chart on the reverse is a concise comparison of certain ritual differences between three historical rites for the celebration of the Catholic Mass Vetus Ordo: “Old Order,” the Roman Rite of Mass as contained in the 1962 Missal, often referred to as the “Traditional Latin Mass.”The Ordinary of this Mass is that of Pope St. Pius V (1570) following the Council of Trent (1545-63), hence the occasional moniker “Tridentine Mass.” However, Trent only consolidated and codified the Roman Rite already in use at that time; its essential form dates to Pope St. Gregory the Great (+604), in whose time the R...

Morning and Evening and other sundry Prayers

+ JMJ Along the theme of P^3 (Prayer, Penance, Patience), and for my own reference ... here is a collection of Morning and Evening prayers from the Ideal Daily Missal along with some additional prayers. In this crisis of the Church, I do not think it is possible to do too much prayer, penance and have patience. P^3

Outside the Church - Part 2

I came across this article on Catholicapologetics.info and realized that it would mesh nicely with part 1 of this topic. I also have included the full text of the letter to Archbishop Cushing. The doctrine 'Outside the Church There is No Salvation' - is usually misunderstood by both Modern and Traditional Catholics. These two references provide a good overview of the Church teaching on this matter.

SSPX and the Resistance - A Comparison Of Ecclesiology

Shining the light of Church Teaching on the doctrinal positions of the SSPX and the Resistance. Principles are guides used to aid in decision making.  It stands to reason that bad principles will lead to bad decisions. The recent interactions between Rome and the SSPX has challenged a number of closely held cultural assumptions of people in both sides of the disagreement. This has resulted in cultural skirmishes in both Rome and the SSPX. Since it is the smaller of the two, the skirmishes have been more evident within the SSPX.  The cultural fault-line that Bishop Fellay crossed appears to be linked to two points of Catholic Doctrine: Ecclesiology and Obedience.  The cultural difference of view points is strong enough that it has resulted in the expulsion of a number of members.  It should also be noted that some other priests expelled since the beginning of the latest interactions (starting in 2000) held the same view points and have joined with the l...

A Look Back: A short history of the SSPX

+ JMJ  I started a timeline a while back but never finished it.  Fortunately, here's one that brings us up to 1994!!! P^3 http://archives.sspx.org/SSPX_FAQs/a_short_history_of_the_sspx-part-1.htm   A short history of the SSPX A presentation given by Fr. Ramon Angles in Kansas City, MO, on the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the SSPX and reprinted from the January 1996 issue of The Angelus . Part 1 The history of the Society of St. Pius X begins, of course, in the mind of God. But do not believe that its temporal origin is to be found solely at the time of the post-conciliar crisis. The Society of St. Pius X was made possible ...
