FSSPX.News: The Decadence of Moral Theology According to Joseph Ratzinger - Updated

+ JMJ  Given my deep dive into the moral theology surrounding vaccines this article caught my eye.  I haven't read Veritatis Splendor, but I think the conclusion is interesting: Ratzinger's minimalist approach sheds a dark light on the famous expression “non-negotiable values,” so dear to moral conservative. It would in fact mean that apart from this minimum, everything else is negotiable. And the minimum, it seems, is established on a case-by-case basis. So basically, the approach seems to be Modernism applied in the sphere of moral theology. P^3   Courtesy of FSSPX.News: The Decadence of Moral Theology

Communion of Saints and Pope Francis' Audience of Feb 2, 2022

+ JMJ Introduction  Pope Francis has, as usual, make some statements that are controversial. Before delving into them, I think it is critical to understand the Teaching of the Catholic Church on this matter before attempting any assessment of what Pope Francis said this time. Context - Church Teaching In explaining the Communion of Saints Ott wrote in Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma: For the purpose of creating the right context to assess Pope Francis' statement, we shift from what is the "Communion of Saints" to who shares in this Communion: Catechism of Trent - Those Who Share In This Communion: The advantages of so many and such exalted blessings bestowed by Almighty God are enjoyed by those who lead a Christian life in charity, and are just and beloved of God. As to the dead members; that is, those who are bound in the thraldom of sin and estranged from the grace of God, they are not so deprived of these advantages as to cease to be members of this body ; but ...

Davd Armstrong - Redux and Reactionary Reactions

+ JMJ   Pre-Pandemic, I noticed that Dave Armstrong reacted to my reaction of his reaction to Dr. Taylor's book "Infiltration" (link ). He seems to have been insulted by my rant (I fully acknowledge that it was a rant) and he posted a counter-rant here (link) .  I am surprised that he decided I was worthy of such notice, but I guess my shot that he was self-taught and self-published offended him. It was not worthy of a Catholic, but as I noted it was a rant and I apologize. So, now that I've caught up on my draft backlog, I thought I may as well have a look at Mr. Dave Armstrong's primary thesis that reactionaries focus on three elements: Pope-bashing. Vatican II-bashing. Pauline / New / “Novus Ordo” / ordinary form Mass-bashing.  I would like to point out that I'm not certain that Dr. Marshall's thinking is 'reactionary' and an abyss of 'doom-and-gloom'? It is most likely how he sees the situation and since it is is not aligned with Mr....

A Look Back: Rorate-Caeli: Una Voce International Federation: SSPX faithful "excommunications" illegal

+ JMJ Just a quick article on something that happened in 2014 and Una Voce's response.  NB: I originally found this on Rorate-Caeli - but then followed the link to Una Voce's website.  Context is almost always helpful! P^3

FSSPX.News: Are We Able to Understand Pope Francis?

+ JMJ  Can we understand Pope Francis, or perhaps more appropriately, his motivations and guiding principles. Henry Sire (author of Dictator Pope) thus declares: “essentially the problem is that Bergoglio has no real principles, like the typical Peronist that he is.” A little further he affirms that “it has certainly a catastrophe for the Church to have as pope the representative of a very bad political culture such as Argentina’s.” As written above, Henry Sire has concluded that Pope Francis has no real principles.  This begs the question is this even possible and what is Pope Francis' goals?  Is he simply going through the motions shifting back and forth to accomodate whomever he is addressing at the moment ... or is there something else going on? Ultimately, it doesn't matter to the rank and file Catholics, we have to do our duty.   But, when other Catholics are scandalized by Pope Francis, we need to help them to be strong and face the stockdale pa...

Can I attend SSPX Mass? Is it sinful to go to SSPX for Mass? Does it fulfill my Sunday obligation?

+ JMJ   As the 'roll out' of Traditiones Custodes continues, I think more Catholics will be asking this question. Here are some answers. P^3 Attached below is the more recent of the two statements, see link for the earlier contradicting one :-) Letter by Msgr. Camille Perl Regarding Society of St. Pius X Masses Una Voce America has received a communication from the Pontifical Ecclesia Dei Commission, concerning an article which appeared in The Remnant newspaper and various websites. At the request of the Commission, we are publishing it below. Pontificia Commissio "Ecclesia Dei" January 18, 2003 Greetings in the Hearts of Jesus & Mary! There have been several inquiries about our letter of 27 September 2002. In order to clarify things, Msgr. Perl has made the following response. Oremus pro invicem. In cordibus Jesu et Mariæ, Msgr. Arthur B. Calkins Msgr. Camille Perl’s response: Unfortunately, as you will understand, we have no way of controlling what ...

Collection: Vaccines and Moral Theology

+ JMJ  I occurred to me that it might be useful to pull together a collection of all the research that I have done on the topic of vaccines and the moral theology behind making a decision to be or not to be vaccinated. Series - Fetal Cell Lines and Vaccines (link) : This is my first dive into the issue of vaccines that are tainted by the use of cell lines derived from aborted (ie murdered) babies. Series - Making Moral Vaccine Decisions(link) : This series contains my deep dive into the making decisions concerning vaccination.  This would apply to both the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines as well as others that use cell lines derived from aborted (ie murdered) babies.  For easier reference, I have created a 'summary' post that contains links to all the articles: Key Posts from Making Moral Vaccine Decisions (link). Series - Vaccines(link) : A variety of posts dealing with vaccine related issues that surfaced over the past couple of years. Series - SSPX Practical Vaccine Consider...

Church and State

+ JMJ   Catholic Family News had an article titled Wicked Governors in this Valley of Tears by Brian McCall.  The article's introduction is below: Recent events have caused many people to ask questions that may be overlooked in times of more peaceful civil life. What is the Church’s teachings concerning the behavior, duties, and rights of Catholics who live in a country controlled by an evil governor? As with many areas of practical moral action, the short answer is that it depends on the types of evil plaguing a commonwealth. Defining Terms Before explaining the applicable moral principles, we must define several terms that are critical to distinguishing morally significant differences in situations. A country that is incorporated into Christendom is a nation whose ruler or rulers has or have submitted their political power to the reign of Christ the King. Although all rulers receive their authority from God, Christian rulers receive it proximately from the ...
